Mindful Book Reviews By Eve: Two beautiful winter themed picture books from Candlewick Press

A1wXY8kPnyL

This is a wonderful seasonal book for preschool aged children that does not contain a holiday theme but instead is based on the time-honored winter pastime of skating on a frozen pond. The rhythmic flow is smooth and hidden in plain site is a lovely book about trying new things, learning that falling down is part of the learning process and that being active is a wonderful way to spend time as a family. Extra kudos for the sweet pencil and watercolor illustrations.

This will pair well with a youth yoga class to prepare the body for skating-figure skating, hockey, speed skating- so many options. Lots of fun balances and even some partner poses! Practicing yoga in a classroom and doing partner and whole group poses is a great way to build community and help harmonize the group energy.

I love the color palette for these nostalgic gauche painted illustrations which perfectly compliment the poem that accompanies John Langstaff’s Christmas Revels. Right off the bat, the cover lures you into the book with the with the fiery orange and yellow hues surging out from the surrounding pitch black. This is a holiday book that takes the reader back to earlier times. It ties together the many diverse celebrations of winter with festive tree and candle lighting to the rituals of the solstice in winter, a time of year when light dims early and people feared the impending darkness and wanted to encourage the light to come back. The poem highlights the many similarities of our winter celebrations across the world-removing religion and replacing it with a history of the earth, discovery and the celebration of life. We are not so different is a resounding message.

Mindful Book Reviews By Eve: Give Me Back My Bones! by Kim Norman

kim.cover_-768x802

Really fun, quirky rhyming book with a solid description of anatomy of the skeleton, that is perfect for the budding scientist. It brings new words and a deeper understanding of the skeletal body in a fun, non-scary way. The book is very clever and step-by-step reconstructs a pirate skeleton all the while imparting scientific knowledge and answering questions like “what is inside me?” and “what do these body parts do?” This is a great first book of anatomy for teachers scientists, doctors, yoga teachers and is fully accessible to very young children with its endearing, friendly, humerus (ha ha) skeleton and beautifully detailed underwater scenes. This is a great book for the Halloween book shelf and to celebrate “Talk Like A Pirate Day.” I love the big bold colorful illustrations by Bob Kolar and there’s a wonderful skeleton poster inside the jacket. This book is a winner from front to back!

I highly recommend it and cannot wait to share it with my littlest yoga students as we bend stretch, and strengthen our skeletons!

Mindful Book Reviews By Eve: The Big Adventures of Tiny House by Susan Shaefer Bernardo

0a932a9f456d4e9d7e21c730e2ffca62-w204@1x

This is such a cute story embedded with the 4R’s: reduce, reuse, recycle & renew. I just lve the jaunty bright yellow of the tiny house-which makes it feel as big as a mansion. The illustrations are top notch and I had some fun laughs at the anthropomorphic faces on the homes and cars. The book shows the negative judgment of people (in the form of houses) but in the end it shows that community is built on giving and sharing and that there is beauty in the uniqueness of life. The book left me with the feeling “if you build it, they will come”, be passionate and love what you do and that a simple song can lift the spirits and make life a wonderful journey. Love the world and all it’s diversity. Love this giant hearted book!

The illustrations by Courtenay Fletcher are sweet and connect to the story perfectly. I love the diverse sampling of characters and how they show in simple ways the diversity of the human race and that acceptance of all is key…and to have a wanderlust…get out there are see this great beautiful world!

I highly recommend it and cannot wait to share it with my granddaughter!

Mindful Book Reviews By Eve: How To be On The Moon by Viviane Schwarz

9781536205459

This book is about the possibility of the impossible and just opens up the door to “you can do anything you put your mind to. Be informed, be prepared and take a risk!” I love how it stresses the importance of math, being patient, being prepared and using tons of imagination to make your dreams come true. It is a wonderful, creative STEAM book to just open a young child’s mind to possibility. Everyone’s a winner in this book-which is great, as attaining your dreams are not a competition but a journey to the unknown. It even has a nice tie into the concept that “far away” does not mean gone, it is just different which would work well for a family move, a death…love this book! The book is full of sweet smiles, an androgynous child and a sweet wild beast. The colors on gray background works very well to give the feeling of space.

I highly recommend it and cannot wait to share it with my granddaughter!

Mindful Book Reviews By Eve: Sun Kisses, Moon Hugs by Susan Schaefer Bernardo

Mindful Book Reviews By Eve: Sun Kisses, Moon Hugs by Susan Schaefer Bernardo; Illustrated by Courtenay Fletcher; Inner Child Flower Books.

As part of Multicultural Children’s Book Da2019 (1/25/19) I am reviewing the wonderful new title Sun Kisses, Moon Hugs by Susan Schaefer Bernardo. The sweet dialogue, encased in calming rhythms, delivers the important message that love is forever. I was immediately drawn to the fact that this story, although seemingly about people who are separated by physical distance, also touches on the reality of a more permanent separation. This book does not make you feel sad; it just allows the embrace of love to be felt, no matter the permanence of the separation. I love this book. It should be in homes, libraries, schools, therapist offices etc. It is not only a beautiful bedtime story for all children, but it also serve an important purpose as a therapeutic book for children coping with grief, anxiety or loss.

The illustrations by Courtenay Fletcher are sweet and connect to the story perfectly. I love the diverse sampling of characters and how they show simple ways that love is always present, even when a person is not present.

Mindful Book Reviews By Eve: City by Ingela P. Arrhenius

IMG_7468

This book is not only coffee table worthy, it could actually be a coffee table-just add legs! I love everything about this giant-sized, hardcover picture book that is full of awesome, fun illustrations accompanied by big, bold words in varied, unique fonts. Each poster-sized page is full of delightful city attractions, richly detailed with endearing characters. This is a truly whimsical celebration of city life that will be poured over for hours-and-hours.

This book would make a perfect gift for the holidays (Can’t deny the super “wow factor” of its size) and for every day. I absolutely love the gorgeous illustrations and fancy fonts!
