Mindful Book Reviews By Eve: The Rhino Who Swallowed A Storm by Levar Burton & Susan Schaefer Bernardo

9780990539506

This is a wonderful book to help children express and release trauma in a very relatable way. Through the power of reading aloud, a parent can help their child release the “storm within” and how to climb out from under a heavy burden. Through the story, we learn that self-reflection can help us proceed through trauma, not with fear, but with curiosity, inner strength and peace. The book is very soothing with its rhyming sections, its use of healing and trusting words and has a lovely flow of onomatopoeia. The book comes a close with a sense of calmness, gratitude and confidence. It is all about love. I love the rich, earthy tones of the illustrations and the sweet faced animals are very endearing.

I highly recommend it! It will remain in my home library so that I can share it with my clients.

Mindful Book Reviews By Eve: The Big Adventures of Tiny House by Susan Shaefer Bernardo

0a932a9f456d4e9d7e21c730e2ffca62-w204@1x

This is such a cute story embedded with the 4R’s: reduce, reuse, recycle & renew. I just lve the jaunty bright yellow of the tiny house-which makes it feel as big as a mansion. The illustrations are top notch and I had some fun laughs at the anthropomorphic faces on the homes and cars. The book shows the negative judgment of people (in the form of houses) but in the end it shows that community is built on giving and sharing and that there is beauty in the uniqueness of life. The book left me with the feeling “if you build it, they will come”, be passionate and love what you do and that a simple song can lift the spirits and make life a wonderful journey. Love the world and all it’s diversity. Love this giant hearted book!

The illustrations by Courtenay Fletcher are sweet and connect to the story perfectly. I love the diverse sampling of characters and how they show in simple ways the diversity of the human race and that acceptance of all is key…and to have a wanderlust…get out there are see this great beautiful world!

I highly recommend it and cannot wait to share it with my granddaughter!

Mindful Book Reviews By Eve: How To be On The Moon by Viviane Schwarz

9781536205459

This book is about the possibility of the impossible and just opens up the door to “you can do anything you put your mind to. Be informed, be prepared and take a risk!” I love how it stresses the importance of math, being patient, being prepared and using tons of imagination to make your dreams come true. It is a wonderful, creative STEAM book to just open a young child’s mind to possibility. Everyone’s a winner in this book-which is great, as attaining your dreams are not a competition but a journey to the unknown. It even has a nice tie into the concept that “far away” does not mean gone, it is just different which would work well for a family move, a death…love this book! The book is full of sweet smiles, an androgynous child and a sweet wild beast. The colors on gray background works very well to give the feeling of space.

I highly recommend it and cannot wait to share it with my granddaughter!

Mindful Book Reviews By Eve: Firefly Home by Jane Clarke

611F7xrq2BL._SX431_BO1,204,203,200_

I was immediately drawn in by the vibrant yellow on the cover and the end sheets. It’s so glowing and alluring, just like a firefly. This book is not merely a book about a firefly; it is a creatively interactive book about curiosity and searching and is full of fun facts and keeps the mind engaged with its cute “follow” directions and is great for hand-eye coordination. The book may seem simple but it is deceptively complex and will engage the reader over and over. The illustrations by Britta Teckentrup are eye-catching with beautiful colors and layering and are reminiscent of Eric Carle’s tissue paper art. I just adore the “electric” bright yellow tail-trails throughout the book-they make me feel happy! Love this book!

I highly recommend it and cannot wait to share it with my granddaughter!

Mindful Book Reviews By Eve: Stay Cool at School* by Lori Lite

Mindful Book Reviews By Eve: Stay Cool at School by Lori Lite*; Illustrated by Richard Watson

I love how mindfulness in schools is becoming the norm and that more and more teachers and school districts are interested in bringing mindfulness and self-help strategies into their school communities. In my opinion, the younger we can start this the better, as empowering our young children with strategies to deal with big emotions, can only be a win-win for the children themselves and the greater community at large.

Lori Lite is in the top of the tier of people offering easily accessible ways to bring mindfulness into the classroom. Her most recent book Stay Cool at School is an adorable and extremely important book for teachers of young children (ages 3-9) who want to help their students identify big emotions and offer them tools to cope. Since coping is a practice, the more this is encourages, the more likely the students will be able to access their wisdom at times of high emotions.

In the story, the two adorable dream monkeys, Jumpy & Sunny help the young child in the story to identify the big emotions experienced, from anger to over-excitement to embarrassment and joy. In each instance, they offer up various breathing strategies that anyone can do, without anyone else even noticing, to increase a sense of calm, self-control and to encourage a positive outlook.

The illustrations are very cute and I love the fun color palette. The scenarios and emotions are well articulated and this book can be enjoyed over and over again.

I highly recommend this book to families and school communities alike. Libraries should have a section for mindfulness books specifically aimed at children. I know I am going to embrace this book and share it with the children I have the opportunity to work with through my children’s yoga program. Its fun and engaging nature make it an easy fit as a gateway into mindfulness for young children.

*A special note: Stay Cool at School is only available through Scholastic Book Clubs. Contact your child’s teacher for their order/login with the teacher’s information to their club and/or their 5 digit class code. More information here http://bit.ly/LLStayCool

Mindful Book Reviews By Eve: Mindful Me: Mindfulness and Meditation For Kids & Mindful Me Activity Book by Whitney Stewart

Mindful Me: Mindfulness and Meditation For Kids & Mindful Me Activity Book by Whitney Stewart; pictures by Stacy Peterson

This dynamic duo of mindfulness books for the mid-grade reader is the perfect gateway into understanding mindfulness and is just jam-packed with short & simple mindful activities, such as meditation, yoga, short self-focused quizzes and journaling to help the young discover the joys and benefits of mindfulness. The book, Mindful Me, is written in a really nice, kind voice as if a good friend is talking to you; it just makes sense for the the preteen mind. I also really appreciate the the book keeps adults (grown-up figures the youth can turn to) present and reminds the youth to reach out to these adults for help. I would also add that the book is great or teens and adults as well and could easily be incorporated into a yoga program or a classroom to bring up topics and activities to increase mindfulness. The accompanying activity book follows along , highlighting the activities in the book. I really love the little notebook feel and the graph paper background. It just begs to be filled in! The activities bolster creativity while bringing the focus to the present moment. I really enjoyed the thoughtful question & answer sections that are written with maturity for the growing mind but are light enough to not be overwhelming. This book-duo is an awesome addition to the mindfulness for kids book and fills a much needed niche for the preteen reader. I highly recommend them both-they would make a great gift!
