Book Review: by Always Be Dancing
Feldenkrais illustrated: The Art of Learning Edited & Illustrated by Tiffany Sankary
As I grew more fascinated with how and why my body moves as it does, I stumbled on the teachings of Moshe Feldenkrais, the creator of the Feldenkrais Method, which is a somatic educational system. After perusing YouTube for informational videos, I was lucky enough to be able to experience this body focused practice with a local teacher, Tiffany Sankary. The basis of the class was not movement for movement sake, but rather knowing yourself by how you do things. Paying attention. Mindful presence. I found that the movement conceptualization resonated so strongly with me in my own reflections on movement. Tiffany’s book, Feldenkrais Illustrated: The Art of Learning is a great companion for movement contemplation. The energetic sensations of her illustrations had me at the first cocoon!
Her delightfully illustrated thoughts of Feldenkrais have opened up a world of pondering on self-image, habits and my own evolution. I found myself reading and rereading each section, rolling around on the floor, embodying awareness through movement. This is a beautiful book. The teachings resonate so strongly with me as I am a person who loves the energetic quality of movement. I love to use movement as an anchor for focus. I highly recommend this book as an accompaniment to your yoga and mindfulness practice. It will truly get you into your body and you could base your daily practices on these beautifully illustrated thoughts.
